New Project

Now I have something new to think and worry over. I have been concerned a long time about what to do with my work when I die. My children are not interested at all. I have a cousin that is but only in searching now and then. She is busy and doesn't seem to have any interest in the 'nuts and bolts' of research. So now I am going on a new quest. There are questions to be answered.
  1. How do I organize and perhaps put into book form my research, making ready for my demise? (The demise part hopefully later)
  2. Where do I put, send or give it? That is the big question.
  3. Get those two questions answered and get it in the Will. How?
Sheri Fenley over at The Educated Genealogist has published a 'Genealogy Codicil' that perhaps everyone should have a look at. She has also offered a suggestion about the 'Where' question with an article called, 'What Happens To My Research When I'm Gone?'

So, this is added to my 'One million things I need to do before I croak' list. At this rate, I will not croak til I'm 152. By then I will have forgotten why I stayed. . . . .

I've been wrestling with this question for the last year or so.
I've taken several steps and one of them was to start my A Canadian Family blog and begin to post information. By organizing documents, photographs etc. for one small section at a time I'm warming up to writing my family history. I hope to draw some family members in as they read it - and together with the database I'll be publishing it will at the very least leave a cyber-trace of my research.

I just read the same post this morning and copied her suggestions! I am not sure my children would be interested in anything except their own part of the "tree." I have several cousins who may be interested and I guess it's time to discuss this matter with them. You never know when you might go....
Thanks for sharing.

I am with you on this! I have been having an anxiety about this too, especially right I am in the midst of the organizing part and things are sort of all over. I haven't a clue who would want my research! It's scary! My husband and daughter think I am nuts for "spending so much time looking for the dead people!" I have very little time to research working full time. I want to get it all together and put it into book form. Sheri really made me put this on the priority list!

Sheri, I'm using Springnote to sort out my research. I can share it or change ownership of the notebook at anytime. It can be downloaded at any time also. I have my blog posts imported to it, and I can export a page from the notebook to my blog post if I want to. I have a blog post about it.
